Cooke School is an educational center for students with cognitive impairments. We serve students from 14 local districts in Western Wayne County, and our population includes students who are severely cognitively impaired, severely multiply impaired and dually diagnosed students who are both cognitively and emotionally impaired. Our students often attend school until age 26.

The programs at Cooke offer our students a variety of educational opportunities. Communication and basic social skills are emphasized, even though we have a broad focus on self-care and daily living, vocational, and recreational and leisure skills. Extensive community-based instruction provides students opportunities to practice independence and functional skills in natural settings. Students also participate in vocational training at a variety of work sites.

In addition to 15 on-site classrooms, Cooke School has two satellite classrooms at Northville High School. Our students have opportunities to integrate into the general education program. We also have one satellite class at the Western Wayne Skill Center in Livonia. That classroom provides expanded vocational opportunities for Cook Students who have expressed an interest in the Skill Center program.

Other educational and athletic opportunities include computer instruction, music therapy, an adapted art program and an extensive adapted physical education program. Cooke's athletic program offers swimming, bowling, track and field, in addition to general physical fitness activities. Many of our students participate in the Special Olympic County & State Games held every spring.

Cooke School students are served by an excellent classroom staff of highly qualified teachers and para-educators, and also by our behavior management team, transition specialist, school social worker and school psychologist, vocational coordinator, speech and language therapists, occupational and physical therapists, school nurses, and adapted physical education instructor. Our school administrator and professional office staff are available to answer any questions you may have regarding the program options at Cooke School.

Monies raised at this event help provide enrichment activities for the students attending Cooke School.
